first off....HAPPY FRIDAY!
aren't fridays just the best? they are.
yes they are.
ok on with the mac n cheese and ellllll-ieeeee.....
Three Things
1. my first teaching love is family and consumer sciences. my first few years of teaching i was a "home ec" teacher. i loved it. then we moved and there were no family and consumer sciences openings. so now i teach health, which is a lot like FCS....but not quite the same. i miss FCS.
2. when i taught FCS, i taught a 8th grade cooking class. every week we had a cooking lab. on thursday i demonstrated the recipe we would be cooking that friday. thursdays were my days. as a child i had often pretended to be on a cooking show. so these demo days were my cooking show. i really enjoyed those days.
2. a. i have a binder full of cooking class recipes. they are very detailed recipes. they even tell you where to put the items needed in the recipe. you have to be very specfic when cooking with middle schoolers.
2.b. on of our favorite cooking class recipes is Macaroni and Cheese. i loved it when my mom made this when i was a kid, my girls love when i make it, my students loved it when they made it. its just plain good. by good i mean tasty. this recipe however is not necessarily healthy or inexpensive.
3. ellie loves helping me in the kitchen. she started helping me make cookies well before she was two. one of my favorite pictures is her helping me make her cake for her second birthday. she feels comfortable in the kitchen. she has confidence in the kitchen. she is fun to watch in the kitchen. so when i said we were having mac n cheese, she was eager to help. in fact, she basically made it all by herself.
the recipe
all the ingredients. like i said not really healthy or inexpensive. why does velveeta cost so much?
melting the butter
mixing the flour into the melted butter to make a roux.
look mom, i am sitrring with both hands!
cubed up velveeta.....we actually used a little more than that.
we added milk to the roux to make a white sauce. then added the velveeta to make a cheese sauce. once the cheese was all melted we poured it over the macaroni.
oh yum!
and the cook approves!
